Canada elects its first Black Speaker of the House of Commons

Greg Fergus, Liberal MP for Hull-Aylmer, makes history as first Black Speaker

Fergus is the first Black person to hold the position

Canada has elected Liberal MP Greg Fergus to be the new Speaker of the House of Commons after the retirement of Anthony Rota. Fergus is the first Black person to hold the position.

In his new role, Fergus will be responsible for presiding over debates in the House of Commons and ensuring that the rules of the House are followed. He will also represent the House of Commons at official events and ceremonies.

Fergus was first elected to the House of Commons in 2015. He has served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of International Development. He is also a member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.
